Joseph Nicolla's profile

American Cancer Society Collaboration to Fund Ovarian

For more than 30 years, Joseph Nicolla has led Columbia Development Companies as owner and partner. Under his guidance, the Albany, New York-based organization constructs and manages commercial, educational, hospitality, and medical buildings. An active philanthropist, Joseph Nicolla supports such organizations as the American Cancer Society (ACS).

As part of its efforts to rid the world of cancer, the ACS regularly partners with other entities, including Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA), to advance cancer research. These two organizations joined together in June 2019 to fund various research projects that focused on treating, preventing, and detecting ovarian cancer relapse.

Compared to all other cancers of the female reproductive system, ovarian cancer is responsible for the highest number of deaths. Further, four out of five women diagnosed with the condition have advanced ovarian cancer, thus increasing their risk of not only recurrent cancer, but also a high symptom burden following cancer treatment.

The joint initiative between OCRA and the ACS will allocate a total of $8 million to fund four multidisciplinary research projects. These projects will look into the clinical, biological, and psychosocial factors that affect outcomes for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Each research team funded by the organizations will be chosen following a peer review process.
